PREMIERE: Nova Materia – “ON/AV”
Prolific Franco-Chilean post-punkers Panico chalked up ten albums in seventeen years and now Caroline Chaspoul and Eduardo Henríquez have reinvented themselves with a new electronic project, the appropriately named Nova Materia.
Released on Parisian label Kill The DJ, they’re already one EP deep under the moniker, and spectacular new single “ON/AV” comes from its follow-up, All The Way, which – once again produced by Chloé Thévenin – will be released later this month on Blow Your Mind Records, the imprint owned by kraut/psych titans Föllakzoid who, coincidentally, and alongside Alejandro Paz and Paul Thomson of Franz Ferdinand, will also be found on remix duty during the release’s run-time.
A punk-informed slab of floor-filling darkwave, “ON/AV” thus throbs to the sounds of industry, distorted beats and dislocated vocal fragments adding sexual tension that DIY percussion (stones rubbed and clanked on metal tubes) tries and succeeds to further undress. An inevitable break-down then leads to a pulsating climax of synth strobes, full-on acid-fuelled tech-house going hard like the showers at Blade’s own blood rave.
