Production Unit – Half A Hole

The latest Highpoint Lowlife release comes from Production Unit, one third of Glasgow techno troupe Marcia Blaine School for Girls. Half a Hole consists of a couple of very different tunes, both with one foot in the old school and one in the new.

The languid techno stomp of “A Little Hope” has shades of early Warp acts like LFO, but with a pounding sub bass, and a mashed up vocal sample providing the melody. “Dem Sirens” comes in with a click rhythm and snaking bassline before opening up with great banks of analogue synth and what sounds like something midway between a theremin and a swanee whistle! At first it seems a little bizarre, but the juxtaposition of the great wash of sound, and the seasick whistling works really well. It’s one of the best tunes I’ve heard this year.
