First Glances – MOTORCADE

MOTORCADE are a band from Dallas, Texas. Members include James Henderson, Andrew Huffstetler, John Dufilho and Jeff Ryan. All four members have recorded and toured relentlessly in many different projects over the years, (St. Vincent, The Apples in Stereo, The War on Drugs, The Deathray Davies, Baboon and Daniel Johnston) and now have joined together to make their self-titled debut album for the terrific Fort Worth imprint Idol Records.

Listed as rock/pop, on first ‘tasting’ I get more than a hint of early eighties new wave and synthpop. Whip-crack percussion and eerie key sounds permeate the album, yet it doesn’t sound weird. MOTORCADE actually have a collection of fresh, honest and upbeat songs albeit with that anglophile, ‘MTV invasion’ sound. UK bands are a yardstick certainly for MOTORCADE’s sonic pallet, but the songwriting (and performance) puts me more in mind of Antipodean bands such as Split Enz or Icehouse. It must be the sunshine.

Teaser song ‘Recover’ sounds like a radio hit to me if that’s even still a thing? Have a listen below. Here they add some lo-fi indie jangle to proceedings, but there’s no holding back that chorus.

Take it away boys.
