The Mutineers
Top 10 of 2018 by Brian Mathusek of The Mutineers (www.themutineersmusic.com)
We put nearly 30,000 miles on our tour van this year while supporting our new EP, Threshold. These 2018 releases got lots of spins as we circled the U.S. We love alternative, indie, folk, blues and punk rock!
1. John Prine – The Tree of Forgiveness
A remarkably simple, beautiful, and honest album by a true master of the craft.
2. Mark Kozelek – Mark Kozelek
Meta-songs for meta-people. Perfect for when you need a break from typical song structure and melody.
3. Father John Misty – God’s Favorite Customer
The best 70’s Elton John impression one could hope for. Bravo!
4. Yo La Tengo – There’s a Riot Going On
YLT doing what they were born to do: keep me driving late into the night.
5. Courtney Barnett – Tell Me How You Really Feel
Passion, angst, great vocals, diverse songwriting and clever lyrics. Fantastic album throughout
6. Sun Valley Gun Club – The Water, The Stars
Lush production, crooked guitar riffs, and cathartic resolutions. Pairs well with psychedelics 🙂
7. Parquet Courts – Wide Awake!
Are they becoming a straight dance band? Not as punk as previous albums but who cares with hooks this good!
8. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – Poor Until Payday
The Rev. continues his journey toward becoming more himself while channeling the spirit of his blues ancestors. His best album yet!
9. Hayley and the Crushers – Cool / Lame
Bring your surfboard to the punk rock prom/sock hop down at the Elks Lodge. It’s gonna be the most!
10. Rayland Baxter – Wide Awake
Surprisingly witty while carving out some really appealing indie pop riffs. Topped off with outstanding vocal harmonies.
