2018 Artists Picks – Tulipomania

[sic] asked some of our favourite artists for their album picks of 2018. The results, as always, were sporadic and wonderful.
We hope that you enjoy this series of feature articles. You will find the lists and thoughts of the artists below as well as a sprinkling of videos from their selections.

Tulipomania
While we worked on the animation for our 2018 Tulipomania singles and video releases of (Off the Map / On the Outside: Spinello Remix) and (On the Outside / Don’t Be So Sure: Seahawks Remix), and another animation/motion project we undertook, producing a large amount of animated stage backdrops for the Pixies’ 30th anniversary celebration of Surfer Rosa / Come On Pilgrim concert tour – we listened to a lot of music – including a healthy dose of Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim.
Some of the new music we listened to while we worked stands out because of the number of times we unconsciously repeatedly played the recordings. Other music we became aware of after finishing our work, and while seeking distance from our own aesthetic – we submerged into the music of others.
Arbitrarily prioritized lists not being our thing – we submit a list of music we found ourselves listening to numerous times in various combinations over the past year. We wouldn’t want to create an order based on some ranking of relative quality – music is not a sport. So we alphabetized this list of 10:
Cat Power – Wanderer
Coltrane, John – Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album
Hassell, Jon — Listening To Pictures (Pentimento Volume One)
Lenker, Adrianne – abysskiss
Low — Double Negative
Molina, Juana – Halo
Paper Dollhouse – The Sky Looks Different Here
Peaking Lights – Sea Of Sand EP
Spiritualized – And Nothing Hurt
Wooden Shjips – V.
