First Glances – SENSES

SENSES are the latest in our ‘ones to watch’ featurette. The Coventry four piece act combine elements of angst rock and Britpop with defiant verses and rousing choruses. Somebody had The Bends and Definitely Maybe on hard rotation. Hell, we all did!

To date SENSES have released a handful of singles. They are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album. Recent single ‘We’re Not Wanted’ will likely loom large on the long player. The anthemic ‘We’re Not Wanted’ has an immediacy that will appeal to broadcasters and listeners alike. It is an earworm that’ll guarantee new converts, to which you’ll hopefully attest as the video is embedded below for your delectation.

I think the last couple of years have been a challenge for the fledgling SENSES (who dropped their ‘The’ somewhere along the way). You can hear it in the music. The good news is that they seem capable of channeling that frustration into their art. I hear elements of Verve, The Boxer Rebellion, Exit Calm, Doves, The Domino State and, of course, fellow Coventry flagbearers (and, I think labelmates??), The Institutes.

I start to think the phrase ‘sent to Coventry’ is a non-sequitur now. I want to be sent to Coventry! With SENSES, The Institutes and others it starts to feel like a thriving scene. Perhaps those that really are ‘not wanted’ can be sent elsewhere from now onwards.

Check out SENSES ‘We’re Not Wanted’ below. The debut album Little Pictures Without Sounds is out in a week. Spread the word.

Buy the album.
