First Glances – Newmoon

With warm tuning and glistening guitar effects Newmoon are an agreeable proposition. The five-piece Belgian band draw upon shoegaze, dreampop and the artier side of post-punk. Slowdive would be the clearest comparison, especially on gazier material like Eternal Fall whilst the gentler passages evoke latter day Cocteau Twins. Bert Cannaerts ‘lost little boy’ vocals lend a fragility to the otherwise powerful wall of sound atmospherics.

Newmoon already have some releases on the Secret Voice/Deathwish Inc label. New album Temporary Light will be released by the Antwerp roster Bandwerk. With mastering by Simon Scott those Slowdive comparisons won’t be going away any time soon. However, these guys are more than mere imitators. I sense a rockier side to them, a bit more heft albeit wrapped up in layers of prettiness. Go check ‘em out.
