Sky Patterns – Answers On A Postcard

Sky Patterns is the new musical venture for South Manchester based musician, Paul Lockett. Having been in bands previously, Lockett does virtually everything himself in this solo project. From writing and performing through recording, mastering and even the visual design and images, Sky Patterns has been a labour of love for Paul and a commitment to DIY ethos of which even the mighty Sarah Records would have been proud.

Debut album, Answers On A Postcard is the culmination of an intense writing period during the latter part of 2024. Influences are widespread. Sky Patterns casts a wide net over post-rock, folk, indietronica and pastoral pop. The title itself is a phrase that will resonate with listeners of a similar vintage to myself. In the pre-internet world Television and Radio competitions would ask participants to send in their answers by means of a postcard.

1980s sustainability in action folks!

Answers On A Postcard has also slipped into semi-modern parlance to now reference any vague or contemplative situation about which we have no clear conclusion. Thus what was once meant to imply something swift and informative now lends itself to dreamy contemplation – much like this record which is both varied and accessible. Promotional single, Chemical Reaction provides an early foothold with its memorable chorus. Lyrically and thematically there’s an ‘inner and outer‘ dynamic at play with some songs skirting the ocean and the elements whilst others dive deeper into the ‘self’. The results are heartfelt and melodic. Highlights include the central pairing of 3AM and The Secret Garden, the Shack-like Northern Belle and the hazy trio that close the record.

Romantic, reflective and tender, Answers On A Postcard may not be an instrumental album as such (Vocals are at their best when Paul leans into that folky delivery) but I think this record’s true ‘voice’, in a way of speaking, is the guitar itself. While the album provides a smorgasbord of styles and genres, we are constantly drawn back to those six little strings. Whether it is on effect- laden dreampop, or folk-inspired meanderings, Lockett clearly loves the guitar. Either that or it loves him. Whichever is the case colour me impressed.

“It takes strength to be gentle and kind” as someone once said, wisely at the time. For anyone wondering why this might be the case or simply seeking a reminder, Answers On A Postcard please.

Answers On A Postcard is out this Friday 7th March via Homeward Bound Recordings. Debut single ‘Chemical Reaction’ is streaming now.
