[sic] Bag #4

Infrequent but handy rundown of ye olde “free for e-mail” downloads with chaff removed by wise old hand on the delete button.

Due to the nature of this “bit” I have to wait till I’ve got a few before I can submit so some maybe unavailable as you read this. So sorry…

…but – holy shit – this is a biggun’ –Primary 1 – Mess Detective a whopping’ 15 tracks of glitched up beat pop. http://theprimary1.blogspot.com/2009/11/mess-detective.html The pink hippo says dive in. I guess a lot are sketches, but fantastic bedroom boffin soul sounds. Possibly better in the sunshine but get it now. Swimming Pools is my current fav.

Another albums worth of free – “Urban Legend”, the new release by Raskolnikov’s Dream is beautifully realised electronica that is deserving of a review of it’s own but I know I won’t have time. http://raskolnikovsdream.com/index.html

White Rose Movement

White Rose Movement seem to be eternally “almost” happening, Helsinki seems to be unlikely to change that. Rather more Pet Shop Boys than the electro Sisters Of Mercy they seemed, close but no cigar. Again. A visit to http://www.musicglue.com/whiterosemovement shows them looking like the Sisters though. Also the is a second track up – The Heywood – which is rather better. Though still rather cold.

What’s wrong with being sexy? Little, if it’s Nice Hair, Nice Titties by Sex Beet http://www.viceland.com/music/tag/sex-beet/ Rockabilly filth, fuck yeah.

Yuck are apparently (well, according to N.M.E.) a great white hope for Indie but I’m fence sitting after listening to Automatic http://www.zshare.net/audio/711645976c10dbab/ . The article in question did tell me 2 of them were in the excellent but hugely over touted (by N.M.E.) Cajun Dance Party and mentions some U.S. influences. They didn’t mention Mercury Rev but Automatic would suggest their influence.

Rather nice bar-room blues rock demo from Kassidy called “Secret Tells A Lie but it’s pretty generic all the same. http://www.kassidymusic.com/home

Vic Chestnutt

We’re getting to the heavier hitters now – Yeasayer’s Ambling Alp sounds like a bit of a grower as we said in the 70s. Still not one I’d pay for. Would have sounded better with Alf singing. Sorry, she’s Alison Moyet now. Oh, they’ve given me O.N.E. as well. Rather better – but still not quite the ticket somehow. This album is getting raves but on the strength of these I’m not convinced of greatness. http://yeasayer.net/

We lost Vic Chestnutt at Christmas and a great way to find out what we lost is the 6 track sampler at http://vicchesnutt.com/home/ . It’s not all to my taste – I prefer his more difficult stuff – but it’s impossible not to be moved by the obviously knowing I’ve Flirted With You All My Life. A song for anyone who has lost those close – or wished to lose themselves.

Lordy, Lux Interior seems to have possessed the body of Kate Nash – I Just Love You More is a spooky R&R stomp, she’s not just “bitta”, now she’s twisted. This is a pretty extreme make-over that would have been unthinkable without the Ryan Jarman connection but it seems genuine. Link below. Time may have beaten us though.

Maybe the best this time is an EP of older stuff from the clearly 80s obsessed French Horn Rebellion . All well and good but it does actually sound like the 80s I remember, Prefab Sprout remixes, Landscape with just a dash of Daft Punk chutzpah to freshen.
