Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle announce debut LP / share “Another Night” & “Esmerelda”
Former [sic] featurists and, albeit briefly, indie-download-chart-toppers Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle are pleased to announce some skeletal details of their long-playing debut – the eccentric outfit kindly sharing two new tracks with yours truly in order to sufficiently whet the appetite.
Following the band’s recent trajectory from the manic (“Into Your Room”) to the more subdued Greek-cum-Balkan herky jerk of “This Love Of Mine”, forthcoming single, “Another Night”, is a winning blend of restrained country strings and folk-rock – a sort of hoedown come-down, if you will. And the track comes with much improved production too, which seems to lends it a remarkable, platinum-selling sound akin to that of Midlake , or even The National if they were to exercise their inner roots.
Turning down the band’s whoopin’ and hollerin’ still further the surprising “Esmerelda” is a sleepy lament, immaculately voiced by frontman Robbie Humphries – the track’s vaguely summery content undercut with sad memories that, perhaps, maybe, recall the sonorous Sinatra classic “Something Stupid” – only here slowed into a pleasing plod and rousingly supported by a trumpet that fills the ears with ambivalent joy.
The as-yet-untitled, yet-to-be-committed-to-posterity Maybe Myrtle Tyrtle album will be preceded by an ambitious marketing strategy that includes the release of three new singles in relatively quick succession, one of which will be the digital release of “Another Night” on May 21st 2012. There will then follow a four-track mini album/EP containing the subsequent single “We’re Not Alone” to be released in June.
