First Glances – Majical Cloudz

Like Chapel Club’s Lewis Bowman , Majical Cloudz frontman Devon Welsh has one of those voices that is simultaneously ‘everyman’ yet special. There’s a depth and a soulfulness to it that belies it’s neutrality. Majical Cloudz recognise this and push the vocal to the front of everything they do.

They’re adopting the ‘less is more’ approach which typifies Canadian pop music in the present day. Minimal drum patterns and progressive loops are the vehicles for Welsh’s distinctive croon creating an atmosphere which is chilled, but sloaded with drama and tension.

The album Impersonator is out May 27th on Matador Records and threatens to be one of the ‘it’ releases of the year. You heard it here first folks.
