The Drums

What do we make of 'em on these fora? I reviewed them for the site and gave them what I still feel is a correct 7/10.

http://www.sicmagazine.net/articles/388/eps-tell-me-now

Promising, interesting, well-packaged pop-combo with acceptable-to-good influences, which steer them into surf-rock now and then. However, I saw them live at the wknd and it all appears to have gone to their heads. Understandable, when the NME lauds them as better than sliced bread and the saviours of everything held dear to the spot-ridden youth.

They duly strutted on stage, preened to OTT reaction from the front row, and to a man looked like Topman models - however, their biggest and best tune aside "Let's Go Surfing" - they appeared to forget to bring their charismatic naivety and knife-edge blend of pop and generic indie-rock. Sure, the same show-saving surf-rock influences were present, but they were mired in unreasonable hype leading to mediocity (at best).

This may sound a touch vitriolic, and in truth I am still smarting from the disappointment (not quite disappointment as I went prepared this may well happen - it has before, a lot), but I thought I'd clear the air. I wondered when writing the review about The Drums' fragility and that their appeal could well be fleeting, and so I'm not suprised to see this happening. With so many interesting bands around (if you disagree you're looking in the wrong places) will we continue to care about The Drums in six months, twelve months? That is, if we ever did. I doubt it.

The internet is a fabulous marketing tool allowing little-to-unknown acts to propel themselves to stardom in very little time. The problem is what propels them is very often little more than one or two tunes and once the initial hysteria wears off, that insubstantiality becomes apparent. Sorry lads, but IMO, you're on the turn.

It's a bit....young, for me to be honest. It's the only tip of yours Rob that I haven't fully appreciated.

All of it my good Sir. Let's say Wild Beasts - I really loved that. Has a real Brit swagger to it.  Japandroids too - ace tip.

Quality both and make no mistake. Seeing Japandroids this week actually, going to be fantastic I reckon.

Re: The Drums

lol, and its not that i dont know about how much they have influenced music today or how they evolved, its just that I dont really care for the music they play.    The only 2 songs Ive ever really cared for are LSD and Come Together

Re: The Drums

I really enjoy some of their songs, but I cant seem to like the majority of their music. I know how influential they were, but I just dont like their style too much.
