That was the Set list for Joy Division at Plan K, Jan 1980. It was their final appearance in Belgium. Months later, Ian was dead.
Brussels is almost as synonymous with Factory Records as Manchester. Throughout the late 70’s and into the 80’s pretty much anyone who was anyone hopped across the channel to play now legendary gigs in Belgium and neighbouring Holland. Les Disques Du Crepuscule and Factory Benelux were born. Wonderful bootlegs were passed around – Amsterdam Paradiso. Eindhoven Effenaar, Brussels Plan K.
Celebrating this, the Plan K club (still in existence, now re-named La Raffinerie) will host Factory Night (and then again) on December 12th of this year. The event will be a celebration of Factory records legacy, not just musical but artistic and cultural. There will be bands, naturally. But there will also be screenings, DJ’s, exhibitions and signing sessions. Like the 2007 event it promises to be an evening/night not to be missed. Personally I’m thrilled by the mere thought of stepping into Plan K. All the rest is bonus.
Anyone who thinks all this is merely nostalgia should reconsider. The Factory ‘sound’ has never been more influential than it is right now as witnessed by this generation’s crop of post-punk bands. Much more than a trip down memory lane, this is a pilgrimage for certain music lovers. If you’re outside of Belgium this might just be the perfect excuse in fact for that Brussels trip you’ve always been putting off. Come see the Christmas Markets, the Grand Place and, yes, the little statue of the boy peeing. (There’s a little girl too if you know where to look)
Then crown it all off at Factory Night.
Of course we won’t see Joy Division. But we will see, properly the superb photos you see here in this article, photos that helped mythologize an already great band. A full description of the night’s festivities and running order can be found by following the link to Factory Night below. In brief, you can expect A Certain Ration, Section 25, The Names, The Wake, Biting Tongues, Graham Massey (of 808 State), Kevin Cummins, Re-Order (tribute to New Order) and much more besides. I won’t reproduce that fine article. As I say, the link takes you there.
