First Glances – High Hazels

.
Certain people believe that rock ‘n’ roll is the only valid currency in music. Such passion inevitably leads to a new great guitar hope being touted on a weekly basis. And, come the release of High Hazels ‘ debut single “Hearts Are Breaking” on the 7th October, they may be next under the spotlight.

The Sheffield four-piece certainly fit the profile: young men with indie salon haircuts that met at school; a brotherly backbone in drummer and bassist Anthony and Paul Barlow ; and jangling, dreamy guitar lines courtesy of Scott Howes on which fans of labels like Captured Tracks regularly dine out.

The vocal melodies of frontman James Leesley seem ransacked straight from local hero Richard Hawley ‘s catalogue too – rarely a bad thing you’ll no doubt agree. The only other track on their Soundcloud page for the time being is “French Rue”, a laid-back croon that lands somewhere between fellow Yorkshire outfit Spectrals and the gentle psyche of latter-day Walkmen .

It’s early days yet of course, but the signs are encouraging.

~Hearts Are Breaking is released 7th October 2013 via Heist or Hit Records .~
