First Glances – D/R/U/G/S
After singing the praises of Museum Of Bellas Artes and their blissful Balearica (see the Track Of The Week feature in the forum), we complete our electro tip this week by taking a look at the aggressive trance of D/R/U/G/S – two young hoodies forever commuting between London and Manchester and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, going about day-to-day life as George and Cal .
Recent support slots alongside chillwave bastion acts like Toro Y Moi and new-age techno botherers Pantha Du Prince have helped the duo’s profile rise to the point where regular support – and upstaging – of touring electro is now expected.
Those few lucky enough to catch their recent slot at the Postcards from Manchester festival, will know their fractured pounding and sampled stream of euphoria leaves a series of marks hard to explain when you get home.
Running big bass lines into chattering samples, “thugged out” beats (as the kids seem to be calling them these days) into worriedaboutsatan -like paranoia and glitchy theatrics, these improbable knob-twiddlers are now in regular remixing demand, taking on work for the likes of Radiant Dragon .
Just don’t act them about their own narcotic consumption – one gets the impression everyone does that and you may well get short shrift. Oh, and it’s pronounced /drugs/ – don’t go wasting your time on the slashes. Yours to enjoy – D/R/U/G/S.
~Check out George and Cal’s tmblr site for some downloadables and their myspace blog for links to even more. And the band are reputedly getting committed to physical for an upcoming Merok compilation. Keep ’em peeled.~
