First Glances – Deafcult

From the name, you might expect some kind of death metal act but Brisbane’s Deafcult are part of the shoegaze revival that’s been simmering for a while and now starting to boil over. I don’t know the Brisbane music scene well enough to claim these guys as the city’s only gazer act but they are a fine example nonetheless and yet another act the Aussies can be mighty proud of. Indeed if they had come out of England’s Thames Valley in 1990 they would have found favour with fans of Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine and Lush. Against the current crop of pedal pushers, I’d compare them most to Pinkshinyultrablast. The noise element comes through without derailing the dreaminess.

Shoegazers of the world, unite and take over.

The self-titled album was released this summer. Find it at bandcamp on ‘pay what you like’. Please support this band. Worth holding onto, I reckon.
